NEPTC is the first official East Coast chapter of the PTCA and the  official WORKING Patterdale Terrier Registry. Founded in 2024 by two passionate Patterdale owners, our mission is to promote the Patterdale breed through education, responsible breeding, and connecting Patterdale enthusiasts in the New England region. We are dedicated to preserving the breed's original purpose of hunting small game, while fostering a strong community of Patterdale lovers.

If you are a Patterdale owner living in New England & love hunting with your dog/dogs this is the place for you. NEPTC takes this breed very seriously & what they do with breed seriously. Keeping the breed pure in every way.

The Patterdale Terrier

The Patterdale Terrier is a breed of dog descended from the Northern terrier breeds of the early 18th century, originally bred in Patterdale, Lake District.

An active little terrier that presents a compact, balanced image. As a working terrier, they have to be capable of squeezing through very small passages underground to follow quarry. This breed is worked far more than it is shown, and breeders are primarily concerned with the practicality of the breed. This terrier must have a strong neck, the fortitude to hold its quarry at bay, the ability to squeeze into tight burrows, and great flexibility and endurance.

PATTERDALE TERRIER WORK

Earth Work

Patterdale Terriers are known for their excellent earth-working abilities, primarily used for hunting and pest control. They are bred to go underground, squeezing into tight burrows, and their physical characteristics, including their sturdy build and strong jaws, are well-suited for this type of work. Their high prey drive and courage make them fearless at pursuing quarry both underground and above ground.

The dog must enter the earth independently without encouragement from other dogs and work far enough into the earth to be out of sight. The dog must locate and engage the quarry on its own, with only minimal verbal direction from the handler.

Ratting

Ratting with Patterdales has become more common do to the fact that they are great hunters, great diggers can fit in tight places and can go all day. One Patterdale can kill 100 plus rats in a day. Ratting is a lot different from earth work, a lot easier on the dog but still a type of work. It also can be a lot dirtier than earth work as you can imagine.

The dog must be quick, bite hard and shake so that the rat doesn't get a chance to bite it back drop the rat at your command and move on to the next.
